Translated Email:
My father Håkon Arthur Bakke was a war sailor. Likewise was Charles Urban Frank. In the winter of 1943 my father visited a bar in London. There he overheard some Swedish bar guests calling the name of Charles Urban (not exactly a normal name). My father went over to them and asked if he had a daughter in Norway called Marit. This was confirmed and he was then told that Charles also had a grandchild (which was me).

Charles Urban broke off all contact with his two daughters Marit and Edith after the girls mother Thora died in 1930. Although Charles had a wife (Olga) who lived in by Tønsberg, Marit and Edith never saw their father again. Marit and Edith lived with their aunt Karen Johansen – Thora´s sister.

We know that Charles Urban had problems with the authorities and did not receive permanent permit of residence in Norway.

Min far Håkon Arthur Bakke var krigsseiler. Det var også Charles Urban Frank.

Vinteren 1943 var min far på en bar i London. Og der var det også non svensker.Han hørte at de kalte en av den for Charles Urban (ikke akkurat et vanlig navn.)

Han gikk bort og spurte om han hadde en datter i Norge som het Marit. Det bekreftet han., og fikk da vite at han hadde et barnebarn (Meg).

Charles Urban brøt jo all kontakt med sine to døtre Marit og Edith etter Morens Thora død i 1930. De så ham aldri mer selv om han hadde ny kone (Olga) på Nøtterøy,like vd Tønsberg.

Marit og Edith bodde hos sin tante Karen Johansen, Thoras søster.

Vi vet at Charles Urban hadde problemer med myndighetene og fikk ikke varig oppholdstillatelse i Norge.

Died on Steam merchant "Magne". His rank/role was listed as "Fireman and Trimmer".

At 15.30 hours on 14 March 1945 the Magne (Master Valentin Eriksson) in convoy FS-1756 was hit on the starboard side aft by one torpedo from U-714 off St. Abbey Head. The stern broke off and the ship (armed with two machine guns) sank within five minutes, capsizing to starboard. The survivors abandoned ship in the starboard lifeboat and were picked up in rough seas by the British coastal tanker Acclivity. The U-boat was located by escorts shortly after the attack and sunk later that day. Position: 55° 52'N, 1° 59'W - Grid AN 5167

Cause of death: Diptheria - although family indicates she got a fish-bone stuck in her throat and died at the hospital.
